School Kits

People in poor and underprivileged countries rarely have access to the modern educational materials that they need. Often, they have no schools or learning institutes for their children to attend. For those who do, the educational materials are often severely outdate and in desperate need of modernisation.

The WCO works hard to send school kits to these countries in order to bring the schooling up to a higher level. By providing educational books and various classroom materials, we hope to improve education in many third world countries.

Schooling is an important issue for every child, and no child deserves to grow up without an education. And this education can come in many forms. We are passionate about providing multiple methods of education, including:

  • early reader books
  • adapted classic novels
  • biographies
  • and non-fiction flash cards on school curriculum topics
  • work pads (or loose leaf) of ruled paper
  • rulers
  • pencil sharpener
  • pencils with eraser
  • separate eraser
  • construction paper (varied colors)
  • crayons and colouring pens

Children have the right to learn in a variety of ways, as no one way of teaching will suit every child. By providing these various materials it allows each child to receive the maximum benefit that we can provide; in other words, it gives them a much better chance of completing primary and secondary education to a good degree.

At the WCO, our materials are presented in a multitude of formats, including:

  • traditional print books
  • printed flash cards
  • DVD or CD material
  • Digital media
  • Videotape

By using these methods, we increase the chances of a child understanding and fully absorbing the knowledge they need in order to improve their lives.

Health Kits

Health issues in many countries are at crisis point, and this is another vital area that the WCO works to address. By providing health kits to various communities, the WCO aims to reduce child illnesses and deaths.

We work to send health kits to poor villages so that they can improve their basic hygiene needs. These basic packs include the following items:

  • hand-towels
  • washcloths
  • combs and hairbrushes
  • nail file and fingernail clippers
  • adhesive plasters
  • bandages
  • toothbrushes
  • toothpaste
  • soap

Although some people might see these items as simple, they are invaluable to many deprived villages. They help to provide the basic necessities of clean living, which can help keep children from becoming unhealthy through poor personal hygiene. When people gain the knowledge and materials to maintain personal hygiene, their overall health improves.

These health kits are also used as learning tools in personal hygiene, literacy, nutrition, and cooking classes. Children can learn the fundamental ways of how to look after themselves, and all through a few simple bits and pieces.

There are also other types of health kits that the WCO supplies to people in need. Among them is a health kit used for welcoming a baby into the world. This kit includes:

  • cloth diapers
  • shirts, bodysuits, gowns, or sleepers
  • baby washcloths
  • diaper pins
  • receiving blankets

These items are vital in helping to bring a new life into the world. Many infections and birth complications can be avoided by simple measures, such as using clean blankets.

At the WCO, we believe that every child also deserves to enter the world with warm clothes ready for them to wear, this is why we focus on providing the basic necessities for newborn children.

Health education is also vital in many poor countries. At the WCO we work hard to develop health awareness in many rural towns and communities. We do this by teaching children through example. That means we take the time to show adults how to look after themselves and their environment, in the hope that the children will follow suit.

Clean living, dental care, healthy cooking, and safe sex are all areas that need definite attention in many third world countries. Without the knowledge and facilities needed to lead a healthy life, hundreds of thousands of children die each year, many through preventable diseases.

At the WCO, we believe that education about health care is fundamental to the success of poor and rural communities. That’s why we make sure that each of the health kits we provide is easy to use and understand. We send health kits because we don’t believe in the idea of fixing a problem ourselves and then walking away. In order to solve a problem for good, it is vital that the people in third world countries know how to look after themselves – without having to rely on outside sources. As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Give him a net, and he will feed himself for life.”

We also believe that communities looking for help should become involved in each and every project in their town. That’s why we ask for the communities to come up with half of the resources, and we will contribute the rest. It is important that villages get involved, as they need to show that they care about the health of their people and that they want to help change the future of their town.
